It was a bad evening for unlawful drivers on the Sea to Sky Highway.

On June 20, West Vancouver police patrolling the infamous winding highway nabbed a number of motorists, issuing tickets, impounding vehicles and possibly recommending a criminal charge.

In the most serious of the offences, a driver was caught speeding at 180 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/h zone. That person is subject to a criminal investigation for their driving behaviour prior to the police stop, said Sgt. Chris Bigland, spokesperson for West Van police.

“Our officers are aware of other dangerous driving behaviours, in addition to the excessive speed, that created a significant risk to the public,” He said. “We are gathering all available evidence to support a report to Crown counsel for criminal charges of dangerous operation under the Criminal Code.”

Officers also caught a learner driver travelling 160 km/h with no supervisor in the vehicle.

In total, police issued 18 violation tickets to drivers on Highway 99 that evening. Those included excessive speed (minimum $368 fine plus a seven-day vehicle impound) and licence infringements. Seven vehicles were impounded in the blitz, police said.

Police also issued mandatory inspection orders to eight motorcyclists due to illegal exhaust modifications.
