‘Honoured to have served you’: West Vancouver dining landmark closing its doors after 49 years

A major property redevelopment has been in the works for the restaurant site for some time.

Long considered one of the North Shore's top spots for a special occasion meal, the veteran Salmon House on the Hill restaurant is closing its doors after a nearly half-century run.

The iconic West Vancouver seafood spot has been serving guests at 2229 Folkestone Way since 1976.

Known for its menu of "minimal fuss" seafood dishes, including their staple roster of alder-grilled salmon, sablefish, and striploin alongside seafood towers, pasta, and Manhattan-style clam chowder, diners could rely on Salmon House on the Hill for its approachable food, B.C. wine list, and celebration of Indigenous culture.

One of the restaurant's calling cards also happened to be its incredible views. "Perched like an eagle overlooking downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park," reads the restaurant's Instagram page.

Operators of Salmon House on the Hill first shared news of its closure date at the end of May, giving customers time to book final meals and use up gift certificates.

The closure notice was repeated as the last day approached, including once more this week.

Customers have responded with fond memories of meals, celebrations, and engagements at the storied venue.

In their message shared to the restaurant's Instagram, Salmon House on the Hill thanked its guests for their loyal patronage through the decades.

"We are honoured to have served you and made unforgettable memories with you throughout our 49 years of service,"

Though the last day of business will be Sunday, July 12, the closure isn't necessarily sudden or unexpected.

In 2024, plans for a sweeping property redevelopment were approved. A public hearing was held that January, with many voices expressing support for the beloved restaurant. The development permit was approved three months later.

When completed, the current two-storey building with the Salmon House and some offices will be replaced by a three-storey residential building on the west side of the 60,000-square-foot lot, and a two-storey commercial building with the restaurant upstairs and offices on the lower level.

The redevelopment will also include underground parking for the townhome residents, as well as 23 parking spots for restaurant customers and staff.

In the meantime, Salmon House on the Hill has not shared any specifics about plans to re-open in the new building.
