West Vancouver’s new pay parking program is driving up revenue.
Since pay parking was introduced in three parks in February 2024, the municipality says it’s brought in $819,000 in gross revenue.
So far the program has been enforced in Whytecliff, Lighthouse, and Nelson Canyon parks.
In the 2024 calendar year, the district made around $601,000 in gross revenue, according to staff. And in 2025, West Van has made another $218,000 as of the end of May.
Until now, the district had relied on smartphone apps to operate the pay parking service, but the district will add two physical pay stations this year.
Now the district is looking to expand the pay parking program, to the Ambleside area in particular.
If introduced in Ambleside Park, district staff said a number of user groups will be affected by the change. Those include park- and beach-goers; casual tennis, pickleball and sports field users; skate park and Keen Lau fitness circuit users; Hollyburn Sailing Club members and guests; Scouts groups that use the adventure playground space for meetings; and dog walkers, including those accessing the off-leash park.
West Van residents are eligible for a free annual parking pass, as are members of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).
Sports organizations, event operators and commercial tenants will face more complex impacts if pay parking is added to Ambleside Park, staff said.
Those include organized sport groups for baseball, soccer and field hockey; commercial tenants like the concession and childcare operators; filming; and various events such as Nowruz, Canada Day, Coho Festival and Harmony Arts Festival.
