THE Vancity credit union will waive fees on money sent to the Philippines through their new mobile phone money transfer program after a typhoon ravaged the country and left hundreds dead.
Nearly 1,000 people have been killed in flash floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Washi in the Asian island nation, leading the country's president Benigno Aquino to declare a state of emergency.
The Smart Money service allows users to send remittances from a Vancity branch and notify the recipient of the money through a text message on their cellphone, with funds available immediately in a special account.
The current fee for the service is normally $3 per transaction, which will be waived until Jan. 21.
