The passengers of a minivan are counting themselves lucky after an accident on a hilly road in West Vancouver nearly sent their vehicle over a cliff.

Police were called to The Dale in the Caulfeild area where they found the van had nearly plowed through the guardrail.

“The one vehicle ended up stopped just over a drop-off that would have been 40 or 50 metres (down). Fortunately it lodged where it did,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman.

The accident happened after one vehicle heading uphill on The Dale collided with another vehicle heading downhill on the same street.

“It’s a fairly sharp curve there,” said Palmer. “Apparently it was quite heavy rain at the time.”

There were no serious injuries and the collision is still under investigation, according to police.
