Two cats and a dog died in a house fire in the Capilano area of North Vancouver Saturday night, after a room engulfed in flames while the owners were away.

District of North Vancouver firefighters responded to the fire just after 11 p.m. to find a fire fully engulfing a back bedroom. The 16-member crew with four trucks quickly got the fire under control, limiting the flames to the bedroom and a portion of the attic, but assistant chief Jim Bonneville said smoke and heat damage was extensive.

The family who lived in the rancher-style home arrived on the scene about the same time as the fire crew, he said, and advised the crews their pets were still in the house.

They were overcome by smoke, said Bonneville, adding crews unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the dog. (Pets) will tend to kind of hide, to get away from it. Theyre scared and they cant get out.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Monday morning.
