One Burnaby COVID-19 outbreak has hit nearly 100 cases, as of the last reporting day by the BC Centre for Disease Control.

George Derby Centre’s long-term care unit on Cumberland Street has an active outbreak that started on Nov. 13. As of the BCCDC update on Jan. 27, the outbreak had logged 94 total cases, including 72 involving residents and 18 deaths.

Burnaby Hospital is also grappling with its third outbreak in four months.

Within days of declaring one COVID-19 outbreak over at Burnaby Hospital, Fraser Health declared another. The health authority announced Wednesday morning that nine patients on one of the medicine units at the local health facility have been infected.

The outbreak is limited to the one unit, which is temporarily closed to admissions, according to the news release.

“Upon declaring the outbreak, Fraser Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning as well as contact tracing to protect the health of all staff, medical staff and patients,” stated the release.

Fraser Health said it has notified all patients on the affected unit about the outbreak and also informed the families of patients who are unable to share the information.

The emergency department remains open, and there has been no impact to any other areas of the hospital, according to the release.
