A man who hosted at least 10 people in his Burnaby basement suite for a party in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last month thought it was fine because everyone involved had washed their hands.

Burnaby RCMP officers attended the basement suite on Jan. 29 after getting complaints of a house party.

With no room for social distancing and no one wearing masks, the guests’ hand hygiene was not enough to save their host from a $2,300 ticket for a violation of the Emergency Program Act, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The detachment is releasing monthly updates about its enforcement actions through the COVID-19 pandemic.

In January, officers responded to a total of 52 complaints, issued three tickets and conducted numerous restaurant, lounge and business checks, according to the most recent update.

On Jan. 7, officers attended a business in the 4400 block of Still Creek Drive after getting a report of a man refusing to wear a mask and yelling inside the business, according to police.

The man also refused to leave the premises, police said.

Officers attended and issued him a $230 violation ticket.

On Jan. 9, officers attended a restaurant in the 4500 block of North Road in response to a complaint the establishment was serving liquor after 11 p.m.

“Police walked through the business and noted several customers with more than one drink in their possession after 11 p.m.,” stated the RCMP’s update.

The owner of the business was issued a $2,300 violation ticket.

Burnaby RCMP’s COVID compliance enforcement team and City of Burnaby bylaw officers continue to conduct regular patrols through businesses.
