Survivors' Flag raised in West Van to honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Ceremony honours residential school survivors

An orange Survivors’ Flag was raised at West Vancouver municipal hall Friday to show support for Indigenous people and honour inter-generational survivors of residential schools. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is on Saturday.

Elder Carla George of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) spoke and led the flag-raising ceremony with a song Friday.

Members of the West Vancouver Police Department, West Vancouver Fire & Rescue, North Shore Emergency Management and district staff attended the event along with West Vancouver MP Patrick Weiler, and members of council and the public.

The statutory holiday in B.C. is being observed on Monday, Oct. 2 this year.

Members of the public are invited to read about the origin of Orange Shirt Day and access resources about the day at the West Vancouver Memorial Library between 10 a.m and 5 p.m Sept. 30.
