School zone speedster loses car

Mounties in North Vancouver are reminding drivers that speed can be costly after they handed a hefty fine to a motorist who burned through a school zone this week at nearly three times the posted limit.

Mounties in North Vancouver are reminding drivers that speed can be costly after they handed a hefty fine to a motorist who burned through a school zone this week at nearly three times the posted limit.

North Vancouver RCMP were manning a trap on West Keith Road near St. Thomas Aquinas secondary just before 3 p.m. Thursday when the 30-year-old driver reportedly roared past at 82 kilometres per hour, well above the 30-km-per-hour maximum.

The officers handed the man a $370 ticket, impounded his car for seven days and added three points to his licence.

Its unfortunate that, in school zones especially, drivers need constant reminders of the potential for extreme negative consequences, said Cpl. Richard De Jong, a spokesman for the North Vancouver detachment. You need to be able to respond to a child running out from between parked cars or crossing the street. Theres a reason why its posted at 30; its going to take less time for you to stop.

School zone speed limits are in effect 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on regular school days. The province has proposed a change to the law that would allow the extension of those hours in some areas, but it has not yet come into effect.
