Reading with Wilson

Reading with dogs is fun, safe and stress free! Dogs won't judge your literacy skills and can be excellent listeners.

Numerous studies have been conducted

on the benefits of reading with dogs that reveal such results as keeping children in reading programs when statistics typically reveal high drop-out rates and improved attitudes about reading.

Amity Options has been fortunate this year to have Wilson join the Shared Reading program. Wilson is also a registered volunteer with Pets and Friends and her owner, Carroll, work together to employ a powerful method- reading with dogs.

We're inspired by the enthusiasm of the participants in the Shared Reading program when Wilson comes into the room. Wilson's role in the program is to greet each participant who can give her a pat, and then she takes part in the reading program. At the end of the program, participants say goodbye with a pat and sometimes give treats for tricks.

When participants are facing challenges, such as not wanting to leave, Wilson willingly rises to the occasion and walks them to their bus. We've even seen some participants who struggle with communicating have more confidence and success when communicating with Wilson.

A theme on dogs was a big hit with the participants. Wilson was the highlight as everyone learned about her care needs and special attributes using books and information from her owner.

Wilson's unconditional love creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that generates conversations and interest in learning more-.with books!
