RCMP arrest robbery suspect

Man holds up Lonsdale Avenue RBC branch Thursday morning

NORTH Vancouver RCMP officers have nabbed the man they say held up a central Lonsdale bank last week.

The heist happened around 8: 30 a.m. Thursday when a hooded robber approached the teller at the Royal Bank of Canada in the 1700-block of Lonsdale and demanded money. He implied to the teller that he had a weapon, though he never produced one. No one was hurt but the suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a release from Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the RCMP.

Witnesses last saw the disguised man running east across Lonsdale. RCMP fanned out around the area but it was not until reviewing security camera footage and interviewing witnesses that police could identify a suspect.

Investigators arrested 42-year-old Randy Wanek of no fixed address for the robbery by 8 p.m. Thursday evening. Wanek now faces charges of robbery and wearing a disguise with intent to commit a robbery. Wanek is known to police. He remains in police custody pending a bail hearing set for Thursday.

Anyone with more information about the incident is asked to contact North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
