Premier extols jobs program in North Van

Standing in nearly the same place she celebrated Seaspan Shipyards successful bid for an $8-billion federal shipbuilding contract six months ago, Premier Christy Clark appeared in North Vancouver Tuesday for an update on her governments jobs program.

Clark didnt provide any new information about shipbuilding project, but reiterated its importance, saying the successful bid was a vital component of her governments plan to make British Columbia one of the top two provinces in Canada for job and GDP growth by 2015.

The Seaspan contract is expected to provide steady work for 4,000 employees, 3,200 of them in North Vancouver. Training of the approximately 150 new apprenticeships the project will create per year is partially funded by a $35-million skills training program.

Clark also spoke on the importance of provinces work to draw investment for liquefied natural gas production in northeastern B.C., reducing the backlog of mining permit applications, and the her trade mission to Asia.

Following the announcement, she was peppered with questions from media about the provinces failed negotiations with Telus to rename B.C. Place stadium.
