A high-profile police standoff on Parkgate Avenue Thursday evening ended with a distressed man being taken to hospital.

More than a dozen police units descended on the 1300block of the quiet street just after 6 p.m. Thursday in response to 9-1-1 call reporting a man barricaded in his home.

"For officer safety and for public safety, we evacuated the units on either side, called in a negotiator with the (Emergency Response Team) and (Emergency Health Services) on standby," said Cpl. Richard De Jong North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.

"Thankfully, the negotiator was able to bring a quick resolve to the situation. The individual was taken to Lions Gate Hospital and has been admitted there. There were no injuries and there is no criminal investigation at this point."

The heavy response was because of the potential for weapons in the home, De Jong said.

The incident was over within two hours.
