Patio Season: Après Moves Outside

A graphic has been doing the rounds on social media site Pinterest lately that's the perfect rallying cry for late spring in Whistler Resort. I'm outdoorsy, it proclaims, in that I like getting drunk on patios.

A graphic has been doing the rounds on social media site Pinterest lately that's the perfect rallying cry for late spring in Whistler Resort.

I'm outdoorsy, it proclaims, in that I like getting drunk on patios. If that makes you want to break out the high-kicks in the name of Vitamin Sunshine- there's a patio seat in Whistler with your name on it.

First, some suggestions about technique. Unless you're still on the hill, change out of ski boots (warm feet shouldn't be clad in plastic.). Wear dark glasses (sun-safe and suitable for discrete sideways glances). Don't mistake the garnish in your drink for a meal substitute (staying power is in the snacking). If everyone else is singing, join in (local band The Hairfarmers' songbook was designed for that).

And finally, know your geography. Every Whistler patio has its purpose.

For example, if you prefer your liquid in the pool rather than in the glass, poolside lounging - an alternative subset of patio culture - is for you. Guests at the Hilton, Whistler Village Inn and Suites, or the Pan Pacific Mountainside come out on top in this department, but as we can't officially endorse poaching their hot tubs, everyone else should head to the Scandinave Spa.

For on-mountain action and the quest for the perfect goggletan, soak up the sun, the vibe and the smell of barbecue outside the Chic Pea on Whistler Mountain or the deck at the Rendezvous on Blackcomb. Parties made up of non-skiers can gather easily at one of the Roundhouse Lodge's decks, just at the top of the Whistler Gondola. Or, secure one of the outdoor tables at the rustic Crystal or Horstman Huts for a ski-in, ski-out session.

For people watching, the one and only rule is location, location, location - something for which Citta's is renowned. Slopeside patios also rank highly with the GLC, the Longhorn, Merlin's and Dusty's all providing that coveted combination of great energy and sun exposure, within an easy stagger from the slopes.

But hey, don't take our word for it. Half the fun of patio season is in the R&D - "research and discovery" (Read The Whistler Insider for more tips and local favourites at http: // www.whistler.com/blog/).

So, here's cheers to spring and to mastering the art of Whistler après.
