Fundraising for West Vancouver’s running track and sports field renovation project took another big leap Tuesday with the announcement of a $250,000 donation from Park Royal.

The West Vancouver Place For Sport committee, made up of volunteer community stakeholders, has been chasing public and private donations for an approximately $4.9-million upgrade to the running track and an artificial turf field at West Vancouver Secondary. The plan got a big boost recently with a $2-million commitment from the District of West Vancouver, and Tuesday’s pledge from Park Royal pushed the fundraising total to $3.3-million, a total which includes previously announced contributions from organizations such as West Vancouver Schools, the West Vancouver Foundation and West Vancouver FC.

“We are incredibly grateful to Park Royal for this pivotal gift to the project, but most importantly to the people of West Vancouver,” stated WVPFS committee member Gerry Humphries in a release. “Thanks to Park Royal, this donation will bring us even closer to achieving our goal and beginning construction on the new West Vancouver Place For Sport.”

The plan for the new facility includes a five-lane rubberized running track, an all-weather artificial turf field, new low-energy lighting as well as washroom facilities.

“We are so pleased to go above and beyond our regular charitable campaigns to be able to give back to our community by contributing to a project that will make such a positive difference for generations to come,” stated Park Royal general manger Karen Donald.
