50 years ago, in March 1975, the City of North Vancouver opened a new city hall and library. Designed by architectural firm Downs-Archambault, the complex was styled as “the North Vancouver civic centre."

In their designs, the architects paid particular attention to the environment and sustainability, using cedar wood as well as drought-resistant plants for the gardens, making the buildings and the surrounding plaza novel in their character.

Prior to this, city hall was in the old Central School, now Presentation House. The new building marked the first purpose-built city hall in the city’s history.
