Police are warning the public after a group of North Vancouver teens had their phones stolen while they were on the ice for a minor hockey practice.
North Vancouver RCMP received a call around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday saying someone had let themselves into a dressing room at Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre and stole six smartphones.
Police will review surveillance footage from the rec centre that night in hopes of identifying the subject.
Two of the phones, meanwhile, were recovered downtown by Vancouver Police Department officers. The victims were able to pinpoint them using the Find My iPhone app.
Thefts from change rooms at community centres, pools and gyms do come in occasionally, said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.
“Police caution anybody to not bring personal items, cash, wallets, ID, cellphones into public change rooms as they may be subject to theft,” he said. “They just become targets for crimes of opportunity.”
