HAS THE DISTRICT DONE ENOUGH TO INVOLVE PARENTS IN MAKING DECISIONS?
The district does its best, however increased consultation can only serve to make sound decisions that are best for all parties.
Yes. School Connects invites all parents to provide input on budget trade-offs, encourages engagement in their child's learning and encourages collaborative interaction with teachers.
This is an area the school board can always improve in. The key to consultation is to actually incorporate feedback into the fi nal decision.
Our goal must be to fi nd better ways to engage parents and involve them in meaningful ways in the decision-making process. Communication is the key.
For the most part yes. There is room for signifi cant improvement around consultation regarding school and program closures, and how to support the families involved.
While the district routinely seeks parent input on decisions, consultation processes can always be improved. As a partner group, parent input is certainly always considered.
DO YOU SUPPORT FURTHER EXPANSION OF PROGRAMS OF CHOICE SUCH AS IB OR ACADEMIES?
Yes, the North Vancouver school district needs to continue to expand opportunities and access to innovative and sustainable programs for all students.
I support expansion of programs that support student learning, including IB, vocational training, and expansion of programs that provide more opportunities for personalized learning.
The board should concentrate on fostering an environment for alternate delivery of education, looking to new models that actually engage students in learning.
I support any program that enhances our academics. The IB program appears to be growing internationally and we need to keep up.
Yes, if facility capacity exists and the quality of existing instruction is not compromised by expansion of programs. Providing a diversity of programs is important.
Expanding offerings enhances richness and diversity, but decisions to expand must also consider the best use of our resources without diluting what we already provide.
WHY DO WE NEED A SCHOOL BOARD WHEN SO MUCH IS DICTATED BY THE PROVINCE?
Because there are very specifi c local education issues. For the cost of one senior administrator North Vancouver gets seven democratically elected community representatives.
School boards provide important local support for education governance and direction, and ensure balance is kept and all students receive the education that they deserve.
To advocate and to engage and work on community relationships to build upon how we best support education through infrastructure and in the classroom.
School boards are elected by the community and are the voice of the priorities and values of the public. Independence has signifi cant value.
The school board encourages local community input, provides board input, advocates for the community, makes local decisions and provides direction based on local community need.
Where the ministry mandates at the provincial level, locally elected school boards are there to provide the district with governance, stewardship and leadership.
DO YOU SUPPORT LONGER DAYS AND A SHORTER SCHOOL CALENDAR TO REDUCE COSTS?
I would support a "balanced school year."
Not purely for fi nancial reasons. The decision should be made to support good educational outcomes.
No. It is hard enough for working parents to fi nd care for their children.
Financial effi ciency is very important, providing the quality of the educational experience is not compromised.
I support calendar changes where informed parents and students are adequately supported through community partnerships.
No, as this directly impacts students' learning. I do support looking at a balanced school calendar.
