A North Vancouver man who was held in Mexico for three years without trial has arrived home.

Pavel Kulisek has been in custody since 2008, when he was arrested while dining unknowingly, he says with the head of a Mexican drug gang.

He was accused of drug trafficking a charge that was later dropped and of being a member of a criminal organization, but the case has been plagued by delays, and as of this spring, he had still not stood trial.

Friends, family, government representatives and other groups have been fighting for Kuliseks release. The family revealed Thursday afternoon that he had finally been set free, and was on his way back to North Vancouver. No word yet on what brought about the change.

The family was not available for comment Thursday.
