District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services members quickly knocked down a bedroom fire in the Seymour Heights area Monday night, saving the home from destruction.

Residents in the home on the 2700-block of Mount Seymour Parkway noticed the smoke around 7:30 p.m. and called 911.

“We were there within two minutes,” said assistant chief Chris Byrom.

The couple opened the doors and windows to let the smoke out, which actually fed oxygen to the fire but crews hooked up to nearby hydrants and quickly had the flames out.

The bedroom itself was damaged by the flames and other rooms have smoke and water damage that will take some time to repair, Byrom said, but the house structure is OK.

“It was a really good save - a quick one,” he said. “It could have been really bad if it was going in the middle of the night and people were sleeping.”

The family will be out of their home for short a period of time but they have relatives nearby they can stay with, Byrom said.

Fire investigators stayed on scene for more than an hour but Byrom said there are no obvious indications as to what started the blaze.

The homeowners did the right thing by calling 911 so quickly, he added.

“The best thing you do is call us,” he said. “Whether you think it's big or small, get us going.”
