THE North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce has been awarded the Chamber of the Year Award by the B.C. Chamber of Commerce.

North Van's chamber took the top honours at the B.C. Chamber of Commerce's annual general meeting, held in Penticton last weekend.

The award recognizes "chambers which have made exceptional contributions to their business community."

In this case, North Van's chamber was selected for its leadership role in ensuring that the business community flourished across the North Shore and beyond.

"As an advocate for its members, this chamber has been at the front of some key issues with all levels of government. After working tirelessly, they were instrumental in securing a 20-year, $8-billion federal shipbuilding program for Seaspan Shipyards," a press release from the B.C. Chamber reads. "This project will have an economic impact, not only in their region, but throughout the province. The benefits will extend to other B.C. shipyards which will participate with Seaspan, and to suppliers of everything from construction to professional services."

"It's incredibly rewarding," said Anne McMullin, North Vancouver's chamber president and general manager. "From the board, to the staff, to the membership, they've all been so engaged and really working towards making North Vancouver a great place to do business."

Beyond the Seaspan contract, McMullin said developments on Lonsdale Avenue, the Low Level Road redevelopment, and raising money for non-profit societies have been priorities for the chamber over the last year.
