North Shore Rescue members are making one final effort in the backcountry to find Carl Couture, the 24-year-old Quebec man last seen Oct. 31.

Rescue crews from around the Lower Mainland have been scouring the Hanes Valley since Friday afternoon, looking in every possible spot someone might seek shelter. Couture was not well prepared for a backcountry hike and there have been days of extreme cold, snow and rain since the search began.

“We have search operations happening today. They started at 9:15 a.m. and they’ll probably go until sunset. We’re focusing on cleaning up a few of our key areas today. If nothing turns up today, we’re going to be probably suspending operations pending further information,” said Mike Danks, North Shore Rescue team leader.

Danks said there is still hope that someone may come forward with information about where Couture may have in the hours or days after he was last seen at the Grouse Mountain chalet, headed towards Hanes Valley.

“Any sign whatsoever,” he said.

Couture’s parents have arrived from Quebec and been kept abreast of the search effort.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Department.
