Dear Editor:

Re: Letter – City of North Van must reconsider Grand Boulevard closure

I write in strong support of the City of North Vancouver’s recent decision to close the segment of Grand Boulevard West between 13th and 15th streets, and to transform that underutilized street into a meaningful extension of park space. The CNV is seizing an opportunity to create a seamless, safer connection between Grand Boulevard Park and Ray Perrault Park, with more park amenities for our community.

During traffic gridlock, that segment of Grand Boulevard is used by vehicles that rat run through the neighbourhood and cut down the length of Grand Boulevard at excessive speed. Impatient drivers frequently ignore the 30-kilometre per hour speed limit on this street and around Ray Perrault Park.

Far from impeding emergency services, the closure simplifies the intersections at 13th and 15th. It will make it safer for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians (including children), and first responders alike.

Our city’s street network, like most cities in North America, was shaped during the 20th century, in the heyday of the automobile. Streets were designed wide and straight to prioritize car throughput above all else, often at the expense of walkability, public gathering spaces, and safety.

Since 2020, the closed northbound lane of Grand Boulevard West has accommodated more than 100,000 pedestrian trips per year. This highlights just how much the community values and uses pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly spaces.

I urge CNV council and staff to move ahead with the plan, including the proposed recreational features like tennis courts or a multi-use court, and to proceed thoughtfully with public engagement.

Let’s stitch together our parks and our community instead of continuing to divide them.
