The North Shore News had the Midas touch Saturday, winning gold for overall excellence at the 2017 B.C. & Yukon Community Newspaper Association’s Ma Murray Awards.
The paper’s “sharp design” and “great photography” helped the News squeeze past fellow nominees the Vancouver Courier and the Peace Arch News, according to the judges.
The North Shore News was also recognized for its Friday Pulse section, which offers the “most varied in-depth presentation” of the arts scene.
“We here at the News could not be more proud,” said publisher Peter Kvarnstrom. “We extend our thanks to all of you that create the great stories and photos that hold our collective attention with every edition.”
Photographer Paul McGrath earned gold for best sports photo for his shot of North Shore Twins pitcher James Bradwell hurling a fastball. McGrath’s picture draws the viewer into the “intensity and focus of the moment,” according to the judge.
Andy Prest took silver in sports writing for his profile of friends and cross-country athletes Ges Bushe and Luke Harris, Nice Guys Sometimes Finish First. The judge credited Prest for a “wonderful story of commitment, courage and triumph.”
Reporter Erin McPhee and photographer Mike Wakefield took bronze for Gerry’s Garden. McPhee’s writing and Wakefield’s photos chronicled Gerry MacPherson’s grief and the beautiful garden he created.
Reporter Jeremy Shepherd nabbed bronze for the editorial Chainsaw Massacre, which examined the aftermath of West Vancouver’s first tree bylaw.
The North Shore News also grabbed silver for special publication for Living magazine. The luxury publication was recognized as “interesting, caressed and a great piece overall.”
The awards are named for pioneering publisher Margaret “Ma” Murray.
