The North Shore News has been nominated for 14 provincial B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Ma Murray journalism and community newspaper awards, it was announced Thursday night.
The annual Ma Murray awards – named after the famous, feisty longtime editor of the Bridge-River Lillooet News, Margaret Murray – celebrate excellence in community journalism among its member newspapers. The winners will be announced during a gala event held at the River Rock Casino Resort on April 27.
The News has been nominated for overall newspaper excellence in its circulation category, along with Kamloops This Week and Peace Arch News.
Reporter Brent Richter has been nominated for an editorial award for “Slow Business,” on the implementation of West Vancouver’s first official community plan update in 14 years.
Reporter Jane Seyd received two nominations, one for the environmental initiative award for “Ocean Pollution Tracker Launched in West Van” and a feature article award nomination for “North Van Judges Rest Their Cases.”
Reporter Jeremy Shepherd has been nominated for an environmental writing award for “Is the Water Safe? Ask the Folks in the Lab.”
Sports editor and reporter Andy Prest has received a sports writing award nomination for “Thanks to a Coach Who Put Players First.”
In the feature photo category, photographer Kevin Hill is nominated for his photo Type H20 Positive and photographer Paul McGrath is nominated for his photo Dog Stays at Condo.
Photography Cindy Goodman is nominated for the portrait/personality photo award for Block Star.
News editor Layne Christensen and photographer Mike Wakefield are nominated for the Ma Murray community service award for their Young Artist of the Week series.
The News has also received a number of nominations in the advertising category.
Advertising sales representative Courtney Harding and graphic designer Birgit Brunner are nominated for an ad campaign award for their work with Stittgen Fine Jewelry.
Tannis Hendriks, marketing, promotions and special features co-ordinator, and her team are nominated for a special publications award for their Explore the Shore series. Julie Hamilton, associate publisher of Vancouver Living, and team are also nominated for a special publications award for their production of Vancouver Living magazine.
North Shore News director of sales and marketing Vicki Magnison and her team are also nominated for a special section award for their Remembrance Day special section.
