On Aug. 1, 1914, the fifth annual regatta of the North Arm campers took place at Woodlands on Burrard Inlet. Known as one of the signature events of the social calendar, special sailings were assigned to bring large crowds of viewers over from Vancouver.
The program included 24 events, including a variety of men’s and women’s races, with a special band playing throughout. The day concluded with a dance, and the last boat ferried people back to Vancouver at midnight.
Only three days after this photograph was taken, Canada entered the First World War after Britain declared war on Germany.
