THE North Shore Community Foundation is scheduled to give out nearly $150,000 in grants to 15 charitable groups tomorrow.

A press release from the organization noted this year the foundation is providing funding for the Children of the Street Society, which runs school workshops to help prevent young people from being sexually exploited. Through the grants, the foundation is also helping to hire new teachers and buy new equipment for the North Shore Keep Well Society, an exercise and wellness program used by approximately 500 seniors. Once the 2012 grants are handed out, the foundation will have given more than $1 million in grants and disbursements since the foundation's inception in 1988, noted the release. Foundation president David Alsop stated in the release that this is a special year for the foundation. Alsop attributed the foundation's longevity to its many generous benefactors. Serving North and West Vancouver, as well as Bowen Island and Lions Bay, the foundation manages approximately $2 million through trust funds. Charities, educational institutions, and government agencies can apply for grants. After applying, the various groups are judged based on their ability to consistently benefit the North Shore, and the need they serve. The group's board of directors makes the final recommendations on the grants.

The NSCF is also slated to present dozens of scholarships to North Shore students at the grant ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at The Summerhill Retirement Residence in North Vancouver.
