Re: Taxpayers in North Vancouver District facing 7% tax hike

Dear Editor,

I have been a property taxpayer in the North Vancouver District since 1978.

I am very surprised in this day and age that any government would be trying to push through an increase of eight per cent in property taxes.

I believe that this will probably be the largest increase we’ve ever seen. At a time when everything else is going up significantly.

It seems that all governments we deal with are tone deaf.

It is disappointing to learn that this also applies to our municipal government.

Almost weekly in the North Shore News we learn of new projects that are being initiated. A lot of which are not essential and should be deferred until they can be paid for by tax increases that are tied to what all residents can afford.

The trickle down effect of the proposed increase will ultimately affect all residence of the district.

I see that West Vancouver is proposing a tax increase of seven per cent.

What is it with every level of government that seems to think that they create their budget however inflated, and then increase tax to whatever it takes to cover their budget?

I think as responsible citizens we should all be approaching our council to make our views clear.

I have approached the mayor, Mike Little, and I’m waiting for a response from him as to how he and the council can justify this increase.

Peter Manley,
North Vancouver
