A fire in a fifth-storey apartment in West Vancouver caused a dinner-hour evacuation for building residents on Monday evening.
West Vancouver Fire and Rescue services arrived at the building located at 22nd Street and Bellevue Avenue around 6 p.m. and quickly put out a fire that started in the kitchen of an elderly woman’s apartment.
The woman was cooking soup at the time but investigators aren’t sure yet exactly how the fire started. A quick response by firefighters kept the small blaze contained to the kitchen area.
“The crews did a great job of knocking it down quickly,” said assistant fire chief Jeff Bush.
Bush said the senior was unharmed during the fire but she will be forced to temporarily vacate her home as remediation work for smoke and water damage takes place.
