Construction has begun on a $20-million project to expand the famously slim sidewalks on the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing.

Crews closed off the east sidewalk in mid-January for prep work that will eventually result in

the old 1.2-metre sidewalk being cut off and replaced with one twice as wide, plus a three-metre high fence made from vertical galvanized steel posts designed to prevent people from climbing over.

The east sidewalk is expected to remain closed until August, followed by the west sidewalk being closed for demolition and replacement. During construction, crews may close one or two lanes of the bridge between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The whole project is expected to be finished in March 2015.
