Home Sharing = Life Sharing

Emma and Jeff live in home sharing with Laura and her family.

Emma and Jeff live in home sharing with Laura and her family.

Emma became a part of Laura's life when she was in her late teens, and enjoyed the support so much that she and her parents asked Laura to continue sharing her home after Emma transitioned into adulthood. Jeff's journey with Laura began when he stayed with her family for respite on weekends. He joined the home a few years later. Eventually, the family decided to move to a larger home that would give Emma and Jeff a bigger, more independent living space and Laura room for her growing family.

Emma and Jeff now share a home in the upper Lynn Valley area, where they have put their creative sides to good use. The suite has been completely redecorated with Emma and Jeff's input, and they have their own renovated bathroom, living and dining area, kitchen and bedrooms. Emma says that Laura has helped her become more independent, and she likes Laura because, "I have fun with her and she is cool." Jeff loves the bathroom conversion and the extra space that gives him plenty of opportunity to vacuum - a favourite activity of his.

Laura comments, "As a child I was introduced to this field of work, as both my mom and aunt were caregivers for adults with special needs. I found myself spending more time with these individuals and knowing this is what I wanted to do in the future. I have worked in this field for over ten years now, either working in respite, lifeskills or being a full time caregiver. I enjoy living with Emma and Jeff, as they are both very different people, they make everyday new. Emma is always smiling, complimenting and lending a helping hand. Jeff is very gentle and kind hearted, he loves to share, and we share a passion for music, which always keeps us talking. For every challenge there is a great reward." Home Sharing supports persons living with caregivers in the community or in family homes so that they can enjoy lives of independence. This alternative residential option provides a more individual and natural level of support than in a staffed residence. With Home Sharing, caregivers (families or individuals) open their home to a person with a developmental disability. These caregivers become contractors with ConneXions.

We screen caregivers and then carefully match them with the individuals in care. We provide follow up support to both the individual and the caregiver. Contracts are for one year and are renewable on an annual basis.
