MOTORISTS hoping to avoid gridlock near Horseshoe Bay can now go online to view weather and traffic conditions in the area at the click of a mouse.
A new web camera pointed east over the Highway 1 ramp at Horseshoe Bay feeds images to the DriveBC website, providing a new picture of the area approximately every 15 minutes.
The camera became operational last week. The camera in Horseshoe Bay is one of 30 new web cameras slated to be installed this year in areas known for erratic weather and heavy traffic. The website is scheduled to feature views from 200 cameras by the end of the year, according to a release from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
"The new web camera at Horseshoe Bay will provide travellers with current road conditions in the busy area near the ferry terminal and Highway 99," stated Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom in the release.
Horseshoe Bay was earmarked for a web camera due to heavy ferry traffic and the large number of commuters driving to and from the ferry through the Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
The province launched DriveBC in 2005 and the website currently features more than 180 web cameras in the Lower Mainland, Interior, and at border crossings.
The website also features updates on road conditions, weather reports, and road closures.
Approximately 2.9 million people visited the website at www.drivebc.ca every month in 2010.
