WEST Vancouver Police are reminding residents to keep an iron grip on their wallets and purses after several thefts.

Five residents reported losing unattended wallets and purses to opportunist thieves between May 25 and June 6.

Thieves swiped wallets hanging on the backs of chairs, in shopping baskets, and a purse left at a store employees' desk.

Wallet and purse theft can lead to credit card fraud, forgery, and identity theft, according to police. Police advise residents to keep money, identification and credit cards in a secure pocket. Police also recommend keeping car keys and house keys on separate rings and not carrying a social insurance card or personal identification numbers in a purse.
