Grow Your own Garden - Good Enough to Eat

Now that spring is upon us and there are more daylight hours to make the most of, many of us are getting ready to head back into the garden.

Now that spring is upon us and there are more daylight hours to make the most of, many of us are getting ready to head back into the garden. But before you dust off those gardening gloves, be sure to check out the latest gardening trends to help spice up your living space.

"Vegetable gardening is huge right now. A lot of people are interested in growing their own food." says Kelly at Dykhof Nurseries. If you're considering dabbling in vegetable gardening, Kelly recommends that you start off with something simple like lettuce or radishes. It's also important to note that you don't need to set aside tons of space to grow your own food.

In fact, Dykhof sells a line of vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers which are specifically designed for containers and perfect for apartment living.

There is also a new line of patio planters designed for small space gardening. Haxnicks Patio Planters include potato patio planters, herb and strawberry planters, tomato planters with supports and raised patio beds.

They are tremendous value when compared to your usual large pots, and can be folded flat for easy storage.

"It is important to make sure that your patio gets a lot of sun to help the vegetables grow," mentions Kelly. Speaking of container gardening, this is also a huge trend at the moment as more and more people are moving into smaller living spaces. In addition to growing vegetables in containers, you can add some decorative greenery such as dwarf shrubs and conifers which are the perfect size for a patio.

In the past couple of years there has been a move towards bringing the comforts of indoor living outside. From outdoor kitchens to elegant furniture with weather-resistant coverings, the possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating your outdoor living space. "People are spending more time at home," says Kelly. "Having a comfortable space outside brings you into the garden."

Flowering shrubs that produce brilliant colours are increasing in popularity this year.

Finally, water features in the form of self-contained fountains or pond-less waterfall systems are also popping up in people's gardens this spring. Dykhof Nurseries will be offering a Vegetable seminar on April 15, focusing on great vegetables for containers.
