Grind closes for the season

North Vancouver's Grouse Grind trail has been closed for the year, according to Metro Vancouver.

North Vancouver's Grouse Grind trail has been closed for the year, according to Metro Vancouver.

The regional authority, which manages the trail and oversees maintenance, says that with weather worsening, conditions have deteriorated to the point that it is no longer safe for hikers to climb the gruelling course. It announced the closure Monday morning.

"We are seeing snow at the top of the trail and there are very, very icy conditions being experienced early in the morning and later in the day," said Bill Morrell, a spokesman for Metro. That has raised the risk of injury, he said.

The closure will likely last several months.

"There's no fixed date for opening," he said. "It's entirely dependent on the weather."
