At this time of year, last school year's report card grades are a distant memory.
The same can't be said for grades given to grocery stores by Greenpeace in June. The 2012 Supermarket Ranking grades the chain grocery stores on their performance on seafood sustainability.
Seven of the eight chains received passing grades with Overwaitea Food Group taking top marks.
The company - which includes Overwaitea Foods, Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Cooper's Foods, Urban Fare and Bulkley Valley Wholesale - is the first in Canada to receive a "green" rating, thanks to major changes in its seafood procurement over the last year.
Overwaitea Foods excludes unsustainable product and supports more responsible alternatives; for example, it recently stopped selling open net-pen farmed salmon. The company also revamped its consumer-facing educational material in its stores, updated its website, and includes red SeaChoice labels on products in key stores.
Loblaw (Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Extra Foods, T&T and Osaka) and Safeway rounded out the top three scorers on the Supermarket Ranking; Metro, Walmart, Sobeys, and Co-op came next, with Costco finishing last.
