Fuss-free plant care

EVERY once in awhile I come across a great product on store shelves. This one in particular caught my eye.

EVERY once in awhile I come across a great product on store shelves.

This one in particular caught my eye.

Rather than asking your neighbour or friend to water your plants when you go on vacation, you may want to check out the Blumat Watering System for indoor plants.

I came across this product at Art Knapp's garden centre and thought I would share it with you. Now, there have been many different indoor watering gadgets on the market for a number of years, however this one stands out in my mind because of its simplicity and the fact that it actually works.

The system is comprised of a ceramic cone (about 8 centimetres) in length attached to a tube and water dispenser. Water is suctioned from a nearby water reservoir (container) through the tube and into a floral tube attached to a ceramic end.

The ceramic end is soaked in water ahead of time then placed inside the planter near the roots of the plant. You must keep the water reservoir at a certain level in order for the system to operate.

A simple water jug will suffice or nearby bucket of water hidden behind the plant.

These watering systems are fantastic for everyday use as well. If you have plants in other parts of your home that you tend to forget to water, the Blumat system is your answer.

One single tube is sufficient for small-to moderate-size indoor planters. If you have a larger plant you may want to use 2-3 dispensers for adequate watering.

The Blumat system is available online at www. blumat.info but you will probably have more luck locating one at a nearby Art Knapp's Plantland. Cost: $8.

It's a good idea to use a water reservoir that is tall rather than short and wide. Otherwise, your four-legged pets may want to drink out of them on a regular basis. (Trust me on this one!)
