Film prize for NV youth

TWO teams of North Vancouver youth won prizes in the Kaleidoscope Challenge, a contest that tasks young Canadians with producing a video demonstrating how they can take direct action and make the world a better place.

TWO teams of North Vancouver youth won prizes in the Kaleidoscope Challenge, a contest that tasks young Canadians with producing a video demonstrating how they can take direct action and make the world a better place.

The challenge creates a forum for youth to reach their peers, communities and leaders by creating videos under five minutes in length, highlighting why they think active global citizenship is important and what makes them global citizens.

Alan Ross, Dante Fengler and Matthew Voiles of scored first place in the 14-to 18year-old field with "The Art of Consumption."

"Our goal is to use the video we've created to educate our community of the issues surrounding consumerism, as it is the basis of a large number of global problems, such as global warming, poverty, child labour and depression," said Ross.

Cara Jacobsen, Reeva Billy and Lauren Lintott of won the Community Involvement & Direct Action Award for entrants 13 or younger with Animal Cruelty.

The North Shore Recycling Program was honoured by the Recycling Council of British Columbia with the Public Sector Award, recognizing its "outstanding commitment and action towards demonstrating excellence and leadership in environmental stewardship."

The West Vancouver Police Department send their congratulations to Erin Johnston, a Grade 9 student at Collingwood secondary school. Johnston is the winner of the 2011 WVPD holiday card contest, which calls on West Vancouver students to design a greeting card that invokes community spirit, the police and the holiday season. The police send their thanks to all the entrants who helped celebrate the district's youth.
