WHEN an elderly woman in North Vancouver opened her door to a "doctor" making a house call March 8, something about it didn't feel right.

For one thing, he wasn't her regular doctor; the man, who gave his name as Dr. Bruce Wilson, said he was just filling in that day.

Once in her apartment in the 1200-block of West 16th Street, the man asked for her care card number and the names of nurses who he appeared to know provided the woman with ongoing home care.

Nothing was taken, and the man never touched the 85-year-old woman, but when he left she felt uncomfortable enough to contact a family member, who eventually called the police.

It turns out there is no Bruce Wilson registered as a doctor in B.C., said Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. The "doctor" was an imposter.

De Jong said it's not clear what the man's intent was. It could have been anything from casing her apartment to using her care card number in identity theft to perhaps using the information to try to get drugs from pharmacies.

De Jong said police want to let the public know about the fake doctor to warn others - particularly vulnerable elderly people - who may be taken in.

The woman said the man was in his late 40s, possibly Filipino, about 5'9" with a slight build and a pockmarked face.

Anyone with information should contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
