District of North Vancouver council unanimously approved a 1.2 per cent pay raise Monday.

Mayor and council were paid a total of $356,482 last year, approximately $4,278 more than 2015. Council’s pay rises or dips according to changes in Canada’s consumer price index.

Mayor Richard Walton was the top earner in 2016 with $100,677 in remuneration as well as $11,446 in expenses.

The municipality’s six councillors were paid between $41,934 and $43,233. Councillors receive the same base rate but their pay is affected by serving in the more lucrative role of acting mayor. Council pay is also affected by accepting benefits including health, dental and group life insurance. Premium costs are shared equally between the municipality and the councillor.

Expenses for the district’s six councillors totalled $13,256.

Coun. Robin Hicks was paid $3,986 in expenses, the most on council. Couns. Mathew Bond and Jim Hanson were shortly behind with expenses of $3,834 and $3,237, respectively. Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn claimed $1,066 and Coun. Roger Bassam claimed $1,038. Coun. Lisa Muri claimed the least with $95.

Including expenses, the total paid to mayor and council for 2016 was $381,184.

As is customary, council unanimously approved the payments without discussion.
