NORTH Shore community centres will get extra equipment to help people suffering cardiac arrest.
Ten automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, have been donated by the Gianfranco Giammaria Memorial Society, and will allow any member of the public to check a person's heart rhythm and, if needed, deliver a shock to reset the rhythm to normal.
The devices are useful in combating cardiac arrest or sudden arrhythmia death syndrome.
While defibrillators are already located at North Shore rec centres for staff use, this will allow public access to defibrillators in all North Shore facilities.
Local fire departments will install and maintain the equipment.
