Fire crews have knocked down a blaze that did heavy damage to a North Vancouver apartment building.

The fire broke out in a three-storey walk-up apartment at 26th and Lonsdale around 4:30 p.m. By 5 p.m. the fire was out but crews are expected to remain on scene for much of the night checking for flare-ups, according to North Vancouver City Fire Department Chief Dan Pistilli.

Mark Pudleiner sent in this photo he took Wednesday afternoon of the Lonsdale Avenue apartment fire as he waited in traffic on an off-ramp.

The tenant from the damaged suite had stepped out briefly and come back a short time later to find it in flames, according Pistilli.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation although there is no reason to assume it is suspicious, Pistilli said.
