The City of North Vancouver’s recent effort to create bike lanes that are physically separated from traffic on a fast and busy stretch of road has earned an infrastructure improvement award from cycling advocate group HUB Cycling.

The city’s bike lane upgrades on Second Street West and First Street West were recognized at the eighth annual Hub Bike Awards celebrated virtually Monday night.

“The old bike lane was sandwiched between parked cars and fast-moving traffic, with a high potential for getting doored,” a HUB spokeswoman said while presenting the award. “This route is a high-traffic truck route, with multiple driveways and intersections. Most people would find the old bike lane very uncomfortable. The new bike infrastructure replaces this unsafe, unprotected bike lane with a protected lane. With physical separation now in place, a wider cycling lane, pavement markings and green paint, people cycling can feel more confident and secure using this route.”

Due to COVID restrictions, this was the first time that HUB presented their annual awards virtually. COVID restrictions, however, also meant that 2020 was a big one for the cycling world, as many people hit the streets on two wheels to enjoy fresh air and exercise in a physically distanced fashion.

You can see video of the entire awards show on HUB’s Facebook page.
