City may alter industrial zoning restrictions

The City of North Vancouver is considering allowing some of its industrial properties in the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood to have a larger retail portion.

The City of North Vancouver is considering allowing some of its industrial properties in the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood to have a larger retail portion.

Business owners have approached the city to ask that the '70s-era M4 zoning be changed to allow businesspeople to use 30 per cent of their building for retail sales, as opposed to the 20 per cent currently allowed. Owners are also pressing for permission for their retail space to sell "household or personal goods," which the city defines broadly as items that can be purchased and taken without a vehicle. The zoning bylaws currently prohibit the sale of small goods in an industrial building's retail space.

Council voted unanimously Jan. 9 to refer the question to a public hearing.
