Charges expected for crash

WEST Vancouver police say a man is lucky to be alive and lucky he didn't cause anyone else's death after he drove his car off Highway 1, rolled into a gully and smashed through a fence.

WEST Vancouver police say a man is lucky to be alive and lucky he didn't cause anyone else's death after he drove his car off Highway 1, rolled into a gully and smashed through a fence.

Officers sped to the scene, an eastbound section of the highway near Taylor Way, at about 2: 30 a.m. Monday. The car had apparently been travelling at high speeds when the driver lost control.

Police found the wrecked vehicle empty, but caught up with the 24-year-old driver on foot shortly afterwards.

"Officers entered into an impaired driving investigation based on the behaviour displayed by the driver," said Staff Sgt. Jeff Young in a release.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are expected, Young said. Speed and alcohol appear to be the key factors in the crash.

West Vancouver police are cracking down on both high-risk crash zones and high-risk drivers. Since January, the department has impounded 115 vehicles for excessive speeding, and Young said drivers who put the public at risk will be handed "significant fines and suspensions."

"In this case, the driver was fortunate that he was not more seriously injured and that he did not injure or kill others," Young said.
