AMID pageantry and surrounded by dignitaries, veterans, family and supporters, the 2573 6 Engineer Squadron Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps have been given the City of North Vancouver's highest honour.

Mayor Darrell Mussatto conferred the Freedom of the City and presented cadet leadership with a ceremonial brass key to the city Monday night.

The cadets marched into council chambers, led by a bagpiper before the ceremony.

The Freedom of the City recognition is given to "individuals and groups in our city who have contributed significantly to our community and demonstrated leadership," Mussatto said.

The cadets represent much more than their skills in orienteering, camping, and first aid, Mussatto said.

"They also participate in ceremonial events like our Canada Day parade and provide community service in our city. The cadets develop a great sense of citizenship and personal discipline that strengthens them to become leaders in our community," Mussatto said.

He added that he was particularly impressed with the cadets' commitment to personal fitness and training.

Accepting the key, Capt. Chris Farmer, commanding officer of the squadron thanked the city.

"This is a great honour, not only for myself but for the cadets. This really shows that the community that we're a part of cares about what we do and we care so much about what we do in the community, it's nice to be recognized," he said.
