Budgie break out? North Vancouver man looking for owner

A Deep Cove man is hoping someone will come claim their break-out budgie.

Richard Cochrane was hiking near the entrance to Lynn Headwaters Regional Park on June 8 when the decidedly non-native species flew out of the trees and landed on his head.

“I think maybe he was scared of the crows. He lands on my head when he’s afraid,” Cochrane said.

Some passersby offered Cochrane a box to hold the budgie in and gave them a ride back to his home in Deep Cove, picking up a bag of birdfeed on the way. He’s been watching the bird since then and trying to track down the owner, who he suspects lives in one of the homes bordering the park or trails.

“In the last three years, each summer about the same time, I’ve seen an escaped bird in the trees there. I think somebody decided in around June to open their screen door and then bird gets out,” he said.
