Break-and-enter victim pleads for return of stolen home movies

North Vancouver RCMP and the victim of a recent break-and-enter are pleading for the return of some stolen property that is of no value to anyone but the victim.

According to the RCMP, someone broke into a home in the 1600-block of Alderlynn Drive on Tuesday, March 13, and made off with what probably seemed like a good haul some electronics and a safe.

What the thief did not realize is that the safe contained items some items of no monetary value but tremendous sentimental value: VHS tapes and DVDs of home movies of the victim and his family.

The stolen footage features the victim right from his childhood until recent years, including footage of his father who recently passed away.

This is not the first time the victim has nearly lost the irreplaceable movies. They were once completely submerged in a flood in the victims native Philippines. After retrieving the tapes and bringing them to Canada, the victim had them digitized and transferred to DVD. He was hoping to send them to family members in the Philippines.

Issuing a statement through the RCMP, the victim is pleading for their return.

Im in grief. Its like my father has died all over again. Please, bring back my family VHS tapes and DVDs, he said.

RCMP Cpl. Richard de Jong said the thief has the opportunity to bring the tapes back without facing the consequences of the law.

If they want to bring it to us, or if they have a friend who just drops it off and walks away, were not going ask any questions. At this point, the owner is more concerned about getting the property back than convicting somebody of the offence, de Jong said. Were just pleading to the conscience of someone who may see this as an opportunity to make right whats been done wrong.

De Jong said, occasionally, thieves do return stolen goods that are of no value to them if there is a public plea for their return.

The tapes and DVDs are labelled: Reel 3, Reel 4, Reel 9, Reel 10, Reel 11, Reel 12, Daddy Well Miss You Part 1 and Daddy Well Miss You Part 2.

Anyone with information about the stolen tapes or the burglary is asked to call the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
