Blood drop DNA leads to robbery conviction

Old-fashioned sleuthing by North Vancouver RCMP has resulted in a two-year jail sentence for a robber who made off with more than $90,000 from a Lynn Valley jewelry store.

Jason Vincent Liss, 37, was sent to a federal jail by a North Vancouver provincial court judge, two and a half years after he and an accomplice smashed their way into the Romance Jewelry store in Lynn Valley Mall.

On May 10, 2009, surveillance cameras picked up two hooded men breaking glass doors to the store and making off with the valuable jewelry.

But an alarm at the store malfunctioned and by the time the robbery was discovered, the thieves were long gone.

RCMP investigators examining the scene found a clue, however - fresh blood that had been left on a shard of broken glass.

A DNA match identified Liss - an Abbotsford resident - as a suspect.

After a lengthy investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Liss on Aug. 23 this year. Police learned Liss was living in Vancouver by then and was also armed and dangerous.

On Oct. 3 he was arrested with the help of the Vancouver Police Department's emergency response team.

Liss pled guilty to break and enter Dec. 13 and was sent to jail. He was also ordered to pay back the $90,000.
